Recent study published in the journal Frontiers in Public Health has found that students who eat breakfast perform better on standardised tests. The study was conducted in the UK at the University of Leeds, and measured the correlation between breakfast consumption and academic performance.
In the study, academic performance was defined as how well students scored on the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) exams, a specific test all UK students must pass in order to move on to college.
For the study, students had to complete a week-long food diary as well as report their GCSE grades in English and Mathematics. The analysis showed that students who rarely ate breakfast repeatedly reported lower scores on the tests.
According to Dr Katie Adolphus, the study suggests that students are at a disadvantage if they are not getting a morning meal to fuel their brains for the start of the school day.
